Prelude

So I went into action today. Why? I was tempted to just remain in the bar, let others deal with this. Letting Sandman get into it alone, though? And ignoring a threat to the flux state? Wouldn't do, somehow. But why move now and not on any previous occasion?

That young girl, she kinda looks up to me when I reminiscence about what I used to do with the old crew. Then you see in her eyes, she realizes the difference to what I'm doing today. Pretty much stops the looking up dead in its tracks.

Gotta admit, too - I kinda felt I was heading for death at some point seeing as I'm not getting any younger, but I sure as hell never pictured being taken out by some asshole dropping space junk on my head. Was this a wake up call?

Quite a few people died today in that flat above the bar. I shot more than one personally. Been a long time since I snuffed someone. How do I feel about that? Well, a lot more people would've died if we'd done nothing and that satellite had crashed into Berlin. I guess that justifies it. After all, we gave them fair warning and more than one chance to surrender. At some point you just have to grant them their death wish, don't you?

So. Silver Surfer. He's about my age, but he was still very much on his game. Proved a challenge to our squad of four. What got me even more, though - he was doing it to bring back the old glory days. You know, same line as me - "everything used to better". Willing to die for it, too. But his ideas of what the old glory days were ... if you'd build two versions of the 2000s based on our descriptions they wouldn't look anything alike. It's psychology 101. We remember the good stuff and kinda forget how bad the bad stuff was. Helps you cope, but makes the brain an awful historian.

His idea of the old glory days being pretty much the opposite of mine got me thinking. Like, really thinking, not "how can I get something to eat today?"-level thinking. Why would my memory be any more reliable? How much better was the past back when we lived in it?

What do you think, owl?
